Starkus – which is the word for stork in old Lithuanian – is the forefather of Polish starka – a noble vodka that remembers the time when Poland and Lithuania were one (1569-1795). This “stork” vodka, in keeping with the tradition of the time, was distilled and put oak barrel when a baby was born and left unopened until the day the grown child was getting married. Because of the similar production method starka used to be referred as a Polish whiskey.
